Driving growth through global dialogue

March update from Wilton Park CEO Tom Cargill

2025-03-13-13-53-27-GC109278

Generating growth is one of the key drivers of our work at Wilton Park, underpinned by promoting the global and national security, sustainability, influence and values essential for business to thrive. Ministers are increasingly tasking us with more ambitious work to support these objectives – a recognition of the growing relevance of Wilton Park’s role as an internationally-respected discreet convening space for decision-makers to meet in a world where such opportunities are ever rarer and ever more necessary.

This month, both the Foreign Secretary and Secretary of State for Business and Trade have been with us to further their priorities, along with ministerial colleagues and foreign counterparts. More information is below, but our growing support for business, including through our Global Impact Group, is one key way we are doing more to ensure private sector perspectives are properly integrated into wider global discussions. We were pleased that FCDO PUS Oliver Robbins spoke to the group recently to highlight the principal challenges that could direct our collective efforts.

One area of primary importance to the UK and the world is support for Ukraine, and we were pleased to continue our hosting of efforts to prepare for reconstruction whenever possible. Peacebuilding and sustainable development globally, as a powerful driver of growth and prosperity, remains a major area of effort for Wilton Park.

Chief Executive

The Foreign Secretary at Wilton Park

We were delighted to welcome Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs David Lammy, and Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, to Wilton Park earlier this month for discussions on building partnerships for a more secure future for West Africa and the Sahel.

Small Business Strategy

We were delighted to convene a dialogue in support of the Small Business Strategy, welcoming Secretary of State for Business and Trade, Jonathan Reynolds MP, and Gareth Thomas, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State (Minister for Services, Small Businesses and Exports), who engaged with a diverse range of small businesses.

The event also provided the perfect backdrop for the launch of the revamped Board of Trade with several new members in attendance.

The Global Impact Group Roundtable

The inaugural Wilton Park Global Impact Group Roundtable was held last month, launching a series of private sector-led dialogues to improve business-government communication on international issues.

Sir Oliver Robbins, FCDO Permanent Under-Secretary, supported the initiative and set the context for frank discussions.

Key themes included the need for government collaboration, responses to geopolitical changes, and clarity on UK foreign policy and trade priorities to support supply chain stability and private sector growth.
