This conference went ahead as planned from Wednesday 11 to Friday 13 December in Cape Town, in the spirit of Nelson Mandela’s leadership on HIV/AIDs.
This meeting followed a previous conference in June 2012 on the new era in HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention: science, implementation and finance.
Despite significant scientific progress over recent years, the international community now stands at a crossroads, needing to urgently translate the ‘proof of concept’ of Treatment as Prevention (TasP) into real world scale up and results, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa and elsewhere where HIV prevalence is high and resources are limited. To achieve this proactive, targeted and sustainably financed implementation plans will need to be developed at the international, regional and national levels.
The Cape Town meeting engaged thought leaders in a meaningful dialogue about how to accelerate the real world scale up of TasP. Participants examined the scientific evidence that underpins TasP; case studies from all regions of the world; steps needed to bring pilot projects to a national scale; methods to share local expertise, experiences and practices; and funding and budgetary considerations. Participants planned actions towards scaling up testing and treatment to carry forward in their respective roles after the conference.
