Sustained poverty reduction and climate resilience to meet the SDGs are unattainable without green and inclusive economic growth. A thriving private sector is the engine of global economic growth, providing much needed finance, technology, know-how and expertise to drive productive, inclusive and sustainable jobs and economic activity. African businesses have an opportunity to drive inclusive economic development with both climate mitigation and adaptation goals, if provided with the required resources.

To maximise the opportunities for the private sector to impact poverty reduction, economic inclusion and climate resilience, collaboration is vital across governments, the business community, civil society, academia, and beyond. Greater women’s economic agency is essential for resilient supply chains, fostering environments where women have equal access to economic resources and opportunities.

This event builds on the annual Wilton Park conferences on Women’s Economic Empowerment and learning from across the FCDO’s economic development portfolio. The meeting will bring together a range of actors and voices to discuss how the private sector can best be supported and harnessed to support sustainable and inclusive economic development, including through the empowerment of women, young people and economically excluded populations and green growth models.

The event aims to :

• Identify the sectors that will drive inclusive growth and job creation in African economies in coming years
• Outline the challenges to growth businesses face and the support they need to prosper
• Share opportunities and best practice to ensure the benefits from growth are responsible, inclusive and sustainable

Learnings will inform the FCDO’s economic development programming, including the Green and Inclusive Growth Centre of Expertise and the UK Government’s approach to women’s economic empowerment.
