Food systems are in urgent need of transformation. Yet policy, institutional and other changes that could drive a transition towards increased food security, greater sustainability and healthier outcomes are constrained by entrenched power dynamics. These power dynamics significantly slow progress on the Sustainable Development Goals and other metrics for progress, with dire consequences. In 2023, more than 700 million people faced hunger, while 2.8 billion could not afford a healthy diet. Food systems also contributed to 31% of greenhouse gas emissions and 70% of global biodiversity loss.
The recently published UNDP White Paper “Supporting Food Systems Transformation Towards Sustainability and Resilience” identifies structural drivers for achieving food systems sustainability and resilience, highlighting power dynamics as a critical lever of change. Better understanding power asymmetries and the ability to navigate them is essential to making more rapid progress. Through this Wilton Park roundtable participants will identify actionable pathways to work with power to shape more equitable, just and sustainable food systems.
This retreat-style roundtable will bring together a range of experts and decision-makers from government, civil society, academia and business in a discreet environment for a unique exchange on how power shapes food systems. The group will identify how we can collectively act to better navigate power and help set the priorities for a new multi-partner Food & Power Initiative, to create more sustainable, resilient, healthy and equitable food systems.
