This meeting aimed to help policy makers strengthen governance structures, and to prepare the international environmental community for Rio+20. Discussions looked at lessons learnt from countries affected by environmental emergencies (for example the volcano in Chile, the chemical spill in Hungary and the floods in Pakistan); the role of the private sector, environmental and humanitarian NGOs and UN member states in strengthening international response; and the long term options for response and preparedness in environmental emergencies. The conference drew leaders from the private sector, United Nations, NGOs, Regional Organisations, and national governments to contribute to the round-table discussions.
