2012 promises to be eventful for the nuclear non-proliferation regime, with the Seoul Nuclear Security Summit, the PrepCom starting off the 2015 NPT review process, and the conference on a WMD-Free Zone in the Middle East all scheduled to take place. Looking further ahead, the Final Document from the 2010 NPT Review Conference has an ambitious and potentially far-reaching Action Plan to be implemented; the future path of nuclear reductions – bilateral and multilateral – has yet to be plotted; efforts to make progress on the FMCT continue; the Iranian nuclear challenge evolves; and the future of nuclear energy after Fukushima begins to take shape.
Nuclear non-proliferation diplomacy therefore has a challenging but potentially exciting time ahead. Our annual conference convened to facilitate dialogue for progressing these challenges.
